A Cryptic Conservatory Community Project

The Maze Gallery was created over the course of 6 months by 34 contributors, 27 of them authors. It is a choice-based interactive fiction game about a surreal art museum that is intent on keeping its patrons forever.

You have been transported to a bizarre museum whose strangeness only grows the longer you remain, and you grow strange with it. Find your way out of the twisting halls, past the impossible paintings, and try to retain some sense of self for when you return to the real world.

This first public release is for IFcomp, and will remain content-consistent over the course of it's judging period. After the judging period is over the next build will include quality of life updates, additional art and music. For now, the Gallery awaits.

The Maze Gallery is surreal and fantastical, not horror, but there are some elements which may disturb. Included here is an exhaustive list of triggers (even if the instance is very small), in the order players may come across them. Alongside them are locations or exhibits connected to each trigger so that players may curate their own experience:

  • Explicit Language - Dead Presidents Wing
  • Mention of Suicide - Exhibit 47 (found in the Missing Art Wing)
  • Animal Gore - The Decapitated Pig (found in the Wing of Bad Art)
  • Violence - Jo's Cafe (if you give the child a quadruple espresso)
  • Disturbing Content - Hungry?, Wing of Four Humors
  • Clowns - Clown Alley (this is on the main path through the museum, but the harlequins are never antagonistic)

Hints & Walkthrough:

Despite the Maze Gallery posturing that it is challenging or even sinister, its actual layout and contents are exceedingly merciful. The player character can never die. All puzzles required to progress to the end of the game are fail-forward, and all optional puzzles can be abandoned at any time.

Of course, there are certain rewards for performing well, and the text reacts to how you solve puzzles alongside if you've solved them at all, but we encourage you to try your hand at any challenge first before looking up a solution. If you're truly worried, there is a "save" feature which is easily exploited in case you make a misstep. But isn't stumbling part of the fun?

A version of this map can be accessed in game at any time after it has been unlocked in the Lobby. There are also directories in certain rooms which can be used to backtrack to any area of the museum previously explored.

FOUNDATIONS

The primary goal of the Maze Gallery is simple: make it out. Along the way you will be tempted to look down every strange hallway and explore every dead end, but here we will help you get back to the real world as quickly as possible.

Act 1

  • Begin at the Lobby
  • Dart to the Inkblot Room
  • Go through the iron door to the Shipwreck and unplug the drain
  • Jump into the Rabbit Hole and solve the trick of the tunnels

Act 2

  • March up, or down, the Eastern Stairwell
  • Walk through the Humperdink Wing of Bad Art
  • Follow the patrons into Jo's Cafe and serve coffee until you can quit

Act 3

  • Rest and recover at the Atrium
  • Enter Cuniculus Murium and take the left tunnel
  • Find yourself at deVOID and leave as quickly as you can

Act 4

  • Pad over to another Inkblot Room
  • Stroll down Clown Alley and speak at a special event
  • Admire the architecture of the Acropolis
  • Hike to the Gift Shop and select a souvenir
  • Escape into the Parking Lot and reflect on your journey!

If you pull the plug found in the seabed, you will be carried away to a place betwixt: the Rabbit Hole. Here the warrens and tunnels twist back on each other and you will need to be consistent to advance, or you will go in circles.

The trick: When presented with a choice of tunnels you will be given three options, each corresponds to a particular category, and to make it out you must successfully choose the 3 connected tunnels in a row.

  • The Rose Path is comprised of Water, Seeds, and Thorns.
  • The Book Path is comprised of Leather, Wood, and Ink.
  • The Crown Path is comprised of Fire, Metal, and Gems.

If you fail to find a connection after 3 attempts through the tunnel, you will come across the Maze Gallery's janitor (who happens to be a Utahraptor) and she will set you on the Rose Path, eliminating the first choice.

If you succeed within your first 5 attempts through the tunnels you will be rewarded with an inventory item (depending on which path you took). This item can be returned to the Missing Art Wing to unlock a unique exhibit. If you do not, then on your sixth attempt the janitor will unceremoniously kick you out as they make repairs to the unfortunate leak your meddling has caused.

When you exit the Rabbit Hole, you will emerge on level 2 of the Eastern Stairwell.

Periodically, you will be reminded to search for a bathroom. Thankfully, there is a Bathroom near Jo's Cafe... Wait, is it actually a bathroom, or an art exhibit?

If you look too long into the black canvas at the Hungry Room, your teeth will fall out...

If you are a dentist, you can simply fix yourself. Otherwise, navigate back to the Teeth Diagram at the Body Parts Room to restore your teeth.

After following patrons from the Humperdink Wing of Bad Art, you jolt awake and realize you have been conscripted as a barista. You need to break your boss Jo's hold over you.

There are three solutions:

  • Give your first patron an Amnesiac Affogato, and have him finish the rest of your shift.
  • Overcaffeinate a child with a quadruple shot, which causes Jo to fire you on the spot.
  • Continue until you interview the perfect new hire, who Jo will choose to take over.

Regardless of your performance (and infractions), Jo will eventually give your role to someone else, allowing you to leave.

Afterward, you can go to the Atrium and continue your journey.

Anyone can be a model! Explore each exhibit at the Body Parts Room and return, ready to select your favorite outfits.

Afterward, Zizi!!!! will ask you to deliver a love note and snazzy high-tech orbs to "Hiero" and "Blob," who are both at the Hungry Room.

Leave as soon as you can! : )

The next location will be a second Inkblot Room.

As Blob's Nom would say, a meal is perfect as long as it ends with dessert.

Blob's life is going wonderfully, but they want to undergo a rite of passage. They have decided to follow their Pare's example by adding drama to build their character.

Help Blob finish their marshmallow bridge, a long-held childhood dream, by finding their diagram.

  • Look at every exhibit at the Hungry Room. Spoiler, the diagram is not there.
  • Treat yourself by becoming a model for Zizi!!!!'s fashion shoot in the Body Parts Room, where they will give you two orb-pins for "Hiero" and "Blob".
  • Give the pin first to Chef Hieronymus at The Banquet of Unearthly Delights, make some attempt to eat, and then give them their pin. They will have advice for Blob.
  • Approach Blob once more in the main Hungry Room, and offer steady words of encouragement until they make the bridge and invite their parents to watch!

At the Inkblot Alcove, you will treat Serena, a patient who has too much of a certain vice...

One of Ernest's scattered poems at The Wing of Bad Art will suggest the answer is "ENVY".

Balance your four humors by filling each of the four vials twice.

Graciously take a souvenir, or several, from the Gift Shop. How will you pay for it, exactly?

  • Pick up a hotel key, which will reveal itself to be a Nebula Key.
  • Approach the nebula, which a mysterious character will use to free your path forward.

Escape into the Parking Lot! Or linger, and explore the Foundations first!

Support "John" and "Jane" in their love by engaging in these three exhibits and telling them about your experience.

  • Visit the "Cow" painting at The Missing Art Wing.
  • Admire The"Hands of God" sculpture in the Body Parts Room.
  • Gaze at the"Old American Feast" in the Hungry Room.

Search the Maze Gallery very thoroughly for hard-to-reach places!

  • Get to the bottom of the wastebasket at The Missing Art Wing.
  • Help the king in the Gallery of Talking Paintings.
  • Investigate The Copperplate at the Historiette Collection.
  • Escape Jo's Cafe.
  • Appreciate the architecture and decor at the Atrium.
  • Select and place the correct objects in the right pedestals at the Minor Arcana Exhibit.
  • Enjoy a gourmet meal at the Banquet of Unearthly Delights, and be sure to end with dessert.
  • Look at the wet floor sign in the Gift Shop.

If you collect all 8 letters (2 in each of the 4 Acts), you will find a "special" ninth letter, a postcard to keep or send to their mum!
